How Iron Ore is Turned Into Steel?

Steel and iron is an essential part of our everyday life.

It makes up the buildings where we work, the appliances that we use into daily life, the cars that we drive.

Without it modern day life would look a lot different.

Last year the world steel industry produced eighteen hundred and sixty-four million tons of steel, the equivalent of over 5100 Empire State building.

So how does this essential aspect of daily life transform from some rocks in the ground into one of the strongest structural materials in the world, let’s take a look.

The steel making process starts with the processing of raw iron ore.

The rocks that are mined containing raw iron ore our ground in near elemental iron is extracted using magnetic rollers this fine iron ore is then processed into clumps that can be put inside of a blast furnace.

At the same time coal is cleaned of impurities in a furnace, this results in an almost elemental form of carbon called coke.

This coke is then mixed with the iron ore clumps and heated together in a blast furnace.

This process produces molten iron ore pig iron from which steel is made.

Different manufacturers often add additives to the molten steel like chromium nickel titanium and a variety of others to produce desired traits.

Adding these elements create different alloys of the steel.

At this point the molten iron sometimes referred to as molten steel passes through continuous casters and is formed into its final shape.

To cool steel production is essential to the modern world but its overall process isn’t really that difficult to understand.

In fact it’s so easy to understand that you could explain it to a kid which is exactly what my new children’s book does Orville.

The iron ore is a story about how tiny little Orville gets dug up from the ground finds new friends conquers challenges and along with a little help achieve his dream of becoming steel.

The Difference Between Hot Rolled and Cold Rolled Steel

Do you know the difference between hot rolled and cold rolled steel?

It’s something we get asked a lot.

So today we’re going to look at some of the key differences.

Let’s start with hot rolled steel.

Hot rolling is a mill process which involves rolling the steel at high temperatures, over 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit.

This makes it easier to shape and form the metal.

The steel is then cooled, which causes it to shrink.

This means there is less control over the size and shape of the finished product.

This is part of the reason hot rolled steel is typically cheaper than cold rolled steel.

Hot rolled steel is used when precise shapes and tolerances are not required.

The three ways to identify hot rolled steel are a scaly surface finish, rounded edges on bar stock, and non-oily surface.

Typical applications of hot-rolled steel our railroad tracks trailer parts and other materials in the construction and welding trades.

Cold rolled steel is essentially hot rolled steel that has been processed further.

While hot rolled steel is heated then cooled, cold rolled steel is heated, cooled at room temperature, followed by annealing or tempers rolling.

These additional processes allow for a wider range of finishes, and closer dimensional tolerances.

The term cold rolled is mistakenly used on all products, but the name actually refers to the rolling of flat rolled sheet and coil products.

The term cold finishing or cold drawn is used when referring to bar products, which usually consists of cold drawn through a die to create the shape.

The three ways to identify cold rolled steel are an oily or greasy finish, a very smooth surface, and very sharp edges on bar stock.

Cold rolled steel is commonly used for machine parts, axles, automotive components and much more.

Hopefully this has helped you learn the difference between hot rolled and cold rolled steel.

Stainless Steel Frets – Do They Make a Difference

Have you ever wondered about stainless steel frets.

The advantage they have over standard nickel silver frets is how long they last but how do they impact the way your guitar sounds or feels.

We wanted the same thing so we put together an experiment to find out.

We took this fender American professional stratocaster with the original nickel silver frets and I played and recorded it in sweetwater studio.

Then we sent this guitar to sweetwater’s guitar workshop and had one of the luthiers change the frets to stainless steel.

Then we brought it back to the studio for another round of recording with the new frets.

That way we were able to compare the sound of the same guitar with the same recording setup and the only difference was the fret material we kept every other factor exactly the same.

Same guitar, same strings, same action and setup same guitar player heck I even used the same pick once we had the studio set up.

We put caution tape around the amp and mics to ensure that it wouldn’t be touched we wanted to make sure that the only thing that changed were the frets was there a difference in the sound.

The results were surprising to us if you want to hear it and see some incredible photos of the fret changing process check out our Nsync article, stainless steel frets do they make a difference.
